2nd September 2012:

Well a lots has changed since I started this page. A whole year has pass by, a new job and coming with that has been a reduction in what I can take as leave. In all I've changed the route to reduce distance but I'm still starting in La Paz, Bolivia.

The route now still takes me south, but I'll spend five days out to Coroico and back before I tackle the altiplano. Using Hugh & Pauline's trip notes I've confirmed my trip estimates are realistic. I should have some spare time to soak up the odd issue.

I've also managed to sort out my mapping tools. I had hoped to use gmapcatcher and run this on my phone but the developers have chosen not to develop for Android. Well I was in luck because in May this year I found just the tools I needed. So with a work flow using, gmapcatcher, mobac (mobile atlas creator), Google maps and last but not least rmaps, I have a full end to end solution giving me remote, offline mapping on my mobile. So should I get lost, or if I need to remind myself of which direction to take then I can fire up the phone & check out my gps position against the mapping I've made earlier.

The phone also doubles as a backup internet connection tool, skype comms tool and if I sort out a sim card I can always use it as a phone ! There's some notes on the Route page on how to use the Android phone for offline maps

9th September 2011:

Managed to get a rough cut of the route. Starting La Paz now & ending in Patagonia. At least it'll be downhill.... literally. Had to do it this way to avoid a wet salar. My bike wouldn't forgive me if I cycled in 12 inches of brine for a few days. It'd be tricky to camp also.

Setup a wordpress page so that there'll be a way to communicate when in the field.

The rough cut route is here... [NB: This is no longer the planned route]

2011 - 7th March:

Created base page for Patagonia 2012.
